No Interest Loan Scheme

The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) provides individuals and families on low incomes with access to safe, fair, and affordable credit. The NILS program is accredited by Good Shepherd Microfinance and funded by the National Australia Bank.

NILS loans are available for up to $2,000 (or up to $1,000 for recipients of JobSeeker or Youth Allowance) to purchase essential goods and services such as fridges, washing machines, or vehicle registration. Repayments are set at an affordable amount over a period of 12 to 18 months.

To be eligible for NILS, applicants must:

  • Hold a current Health Care Card, or

  • Earn less than $57,000 per year (after tax) for singles, or $75,000 (after tax) for couples, and

  • Have lived at their current address for more than three months.

Loans can be used for essential goods and services, including:

  • Household items such as fridges, washing machines, stoves, dryers, freezers, and furniture

  • Some medical and dental services

  • Education essentials like computers and textbooks

  • Vehicle registration (6 months only)

  • Other essential items, subject to approval

Loans cannot be used for:

  • Cash

  • Rental bond or rent arrears

  • Debt consolidation

  • Holidays or travel

  • Utility or other household bills
