The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)

The St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland's No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) provides individuals and families on low incomes with access to safe, fair and affordable credit.  The NILS Program is accredited by Good Shepherd Microfinance and funded by the National Australia Bank.

NILS Loans are available for up to $2,000 (or up to $1,000 for Jobseeker and Youth Allowance recipients) for essential goods and services such as fridges, washing machines and vehicle registrations.  Repayments are set up at an affordable amount over 12 to 18 months.

To be eligible for NILS you must have a Health Care Card or earn less than $57,000 a year (after tax) for singles, or $75,000 (after tax) for couples.  You must also have lived at your current address for more than 3 months.

Loans are available for the purchase of essential goods and services such as:

  • Household items like fridges, washing machines, stoves, dryers, freezers and furniture.

  • Some medical and dental services.

  • Education essentials such as computers and text books.

  • Vehicle registration - 6 months only.

  • Some other item as requested.

Loans cannot be used for cash, bond, rent arrears, debt consolidation, holidays, vehicle servicing or repairs, or bills.
